RIP Lemmy

This morning I woke up to the news that Lemmy, formerly of Motorhead, had sadly passed away at the age of 70, 2 days after it was discovered he was suffering from cancer. The metal legend, who played bass and sang for Motorhead, was known for a pretty intense lifestyle, so this isn't really a surprise, but the news is extremely sad nonetheless. I'll look back at the best moments of his life, celebrating one of the most iconic and legendary figures in rock and metal history.

Ace Of Spades Released

After being kicked out of his previous band Hawkwind for 'doing the wrong kinds of drugs,' Lemmy formed Motorhead, or 'Bastard' as they were originally known. Their first album, Ace Of Spades, was released in 1980 and reached number 4 in the charts. The title track from that album is one of the most iconic songs in metal history, and more importantly this album was one that laid the foundations for thrash metal - it was the first time that anyone had combined punk and heavy metal to make something this fast and heavy. 

Collection of Nazi Memorabilia

One of the more controversial things about Lemmy was his infamous collection of Nazi items, including an iron cross he would wear around his neck. He said that he was not a supporter of the Nazis, and that he only collected them for how they looked, saying 'bad guys dressed the best.' 

The Nolan Sisters Myth

None of us know whether it's true or not, but it's rumoured that once, while on the set of Top Of The Pops, Lemmy had sex with all of the Nolan Sisters backstage. He once said that they turned him down and the myth isn't true, but who knows? It's also rumoured that in his lifetime Lemmy slept with over 2000 different women. He denied that as well, saying it was only half that.So not many then.

His Rickenbacker Bass

In around 2000, Lemmy started playing his famous Rickenbacker bass, which is closer to a work of art than an instrument. It had leaves hand-carved into it, and was known for being one of the most beautiful basses in the world, but unfortunately was limited to only 60 units. His bass can be seen in all it's glory in the picture on the right.

The remaining members of Motorhead recently posted on facebook to 'Play Lemmy's music LOUD. Have a drink or few. Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself. HE WOULD WANT EXACTLY THAT.' So do that, celebrate the life of one of the biggest legends ever in rock and metal. RIP Lemmy, you'll be missed.
